Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence, and by the greater possibilities of their future.

Our Program

A Montessori education is a holistic education, forward looking in that it prepares the child to enter into the world not with a set of memorized facts or correct test answers, but as a contributing member of society who can learn from experience, adapt to the environment, and is able to help others and work toward the common good. A general love of learning that spans from preschool throughout adulthood and a lifelong curiosity for the world are some of the many positive affects of a Montessori experience.

At Huckleberry, through a specialized process of observation, a credentialed Montessori teacher gets to know each child and is aware of each student's individual strengths, weaknesses, and needs. A child who will benefit from more challenging work will be redirected and encouraged to explore something new. When a particular work or activity peaks a child's interest, the Montessori teacher ensures the child knows how to use the material correctly so that the process of learning is natural and rewarding. Repetition and successful completion of a work, with little outside help from the adult, gives children confidence and a sense of ownership over their surroundings. In addition to the wonders of the Montessori materials and environment, Huckleberry Montessori will also offer the children materials and experiences in Spanish thoughtfully incorporated throughout the environment. A unique Peace Curriculum is another beautiful and important aspect at Huckleberry along with daily practices in yoga!

Huckleberry Montessori serves children ages 3 years old (and toilet independent) through 6 years old.

The school year is 9 months long, beginning in early September and ending in late May.

Class will be held Monday-Thursday 8am-2pm for the 2023/2024 school year.

We will observe major holidays and breaks throughout the year.

Annual tuition for the 2023/2024 school year is $6900.

Tuition is billed in 9 monthly installments from September-May.

A TYPICAL SCHOOL DAY, 8a-2p, M-TH.

  • Arrival: Children arrive at school  between 8 and 8:15a. The day begins with line time where children and teachers discuss current events, review the calendar and weather, present new material, sing songs, have fun, and start our day. Early in the year, the teacher may present an essential lesson to the group (how to roll a rug, how to carry a tray, how to ask for help) or may show a new material and demonstrate how to use a new work. Group activities such as baking and yoga are also presented at line time.
  • Morning Work Cycle: An integral part of the Montessori curriculum is the "work cycle," an uninterrupted work period of 2 hours during which children are free to choose a work from any of the 5 distinct areas of the Montessori classroom: practical life and art, sensorial, language, math, and geography/cultural. They may explore the environment in small groups or individually, or receive a lesson from the teacher or even an older child. Snack is prepared and available to the children in a way that they can be independent and serve themselves when they feel hungry and sit with a friend to enjoy together.  When they are finished they will even get to wash their own dishes!
  • Outside Activity: We will suit up and head outside each morning for a minimum of one hour, weather permitting. Along with free-play playground fun there will be options for gardening and in warm weather, outdoor work and materials such as hammering, building, cloth washing, yoga, and other creative experiences!
  • Lunch: Children eat lunch brought from home around noon. Lunch is an extension of the work cycle and a time to practice grace and courtesy. Children will help with setting the table for each other and enjoy eating together as a community with their teacher. It is not uncommon to see the tables decorated with small vases of flowers and candles, along with placemats, napkins, and good conversation!
  • Rest: Lunch is followed by a rest period of about 20 minutes during which children rest their bodies while listening to soft music or a story.
  • Afternoon:  After rest the children will either engage in a bit more work time,  a group cultural or art activity, or finish the day on the playground.
  • Dismissal: Children will gather their things and prepare to go home! Pick up is between 1:45 and 2p.
